Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I expect during my first visit?

What is an Orthodontist?:  Orthodontics is a special area of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of dental and facial irregularities caused by crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth or poorly aligned jawbones.  These types of dental problems are best treated by an orthodontist who is a dentist and who has completed two additional years of advanced training at a dental school approved by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists.  Back to Top

How can I or my child benefit from orthodontics?:  A pretty smile improves appearance. Improved appearance builds self-confidence and self-esteem. Straightened teeth are healthier, easier to clean and therefore more likely to last throughout a lifetime.

What can happen if orthodontic problems go untreated?:  First, crooked and crowded teeth are definitely harder to keep clean than straight teeth.  Second, more serious and costly dental health problems can occur such as tooth decay, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss.  Finally, a poor fitting together of the teeth can make it difficult to chew, can cause uneven wearing of the teeth, and can be associated with clicking and popping noises and muscle pain of the TMJ area (where the lower jaw meets the skull).

What age should my child first see an orthodontist?:  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that young people see an orthodontist at age seven. At this age, many problems can be detected and early treatment planned to prevent or reduce the severity of the problem later.

How much does it cost to get braces?:  There is no charge for your initial examination and video imaging procedures. The fee for diagnostic records is due when the records are made and is deducted from the total orthodontic fee when treatment is started.

The total cost of orthodontic treament varies widely, depending on:
    1. The severity of the problem
    2. The length of treatment
    3. The type of braces used
    4. Patient cooperation (i.e. keeping the teeth clean and wearing appliances as instructed)
    5. Whether partial or complete treatment results are desired.

We are happy to work out a payment plan that allows you to pay the fee over the estimated treatment time with no interest charges as long as the account is kept current.

Do you accept insurance?:  If your dental plan has orthodontic coverage, we will be happy to complete your forms so that you will receive your full benefits.  Payments from your insurance company go directly to you and you are responsible for paying us.

Where does my general family dentist fit in?:  Dr. Taylor and your family dentist work closely together to keep patients in good oral health.  Your family dentist will provide all necessary pre-orthodontic procedures such as cleaning, fluoride treatments, and any extractions that may be necessary.  All patients are urged to see their family dentist every six months throughout their orthodontic treatment.

Does my dentist have to refer me?:  No, your dentist doesn't have to refer you! Even through many of our patients are referred to us by their dentist, many of them come to us on their own or from other patient referrals.  If you know someone who needs braces, or is thinking about getting them, we would welcome the opportunity to give them a Taylor Made Smile!

I thought braces were just for kids...do you also see adults?:  It's no longer a stigma to be an adult who is wearing braces! Any adult orthodontic problems can and should be corrected. Nearly one-third of al orthodontic patients are adults and this is increasing every year. Back to Top

What should I expect during my first visit?:  During your first visit to our office, you will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Taylor and his wonderful staff. Our office was one of the first in North Carolina to use the state-of-the-art Digigraph Video Imaging System which creates a sharp video image of the face and teeth on a TV monitor. These video images allow Dr. Taylor to more thoroughly explain treatment needs and to demonstrate possible treatment results at the exam (initial) appointment.  If Dr. Taylor's treatment recommendations are desired and/or accepted, then additional standard records (flavored impressions for diagnostic models and low-radiation x-rays) will be needed to complete the comprehensive skeletal and dental analysis. These additional records may be made at this first appointment.
